Projects

Wellness Program

In 2025, as part of the Mujeres Amate Project, we launched our Wellness Program and held the first nutritionalist led workshop focusing on diabetes.

Through the Amate Project our goal is to support the health of local women. More specifically, our goal is to raise money to provide as many local women as possible with a complete gynecological exam, a mammogram and ultrasound as well as follow up individual bi-monthly consultations with the nutritionist and personal trainer.

This will be a first for almost all the women. So, to prepare them and allay their fears, the Mujeres Wellness Team will host a preliminary interactive retreat on women’s health issues and what to expect during the exams. After completing the workshop, MM will provide transportation to the exams. The women will go together in small groups, thereby providing each other with reassurance and emotional support.

Meet Our Nutritionist: Maria Jimenez

“Hello everyone! My name is Maria Jimenez and I am a Clinical Nutritionist from the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla and since I graduated I have tried to keep myself constantly updated with courses, congresses and diploma courses, among them the Diploma as a diabetes educator by the Mexican Diabetes Association.

My goal for anyone who asks for my support is to prevent complications and diseases with nutritional education in a timely manner, reminding you that you are still in time to avoid surgery or start taking a large list of medications, a good diet according to your needs can prevent all that since it is never too late to start healthy habits.

I love being a nutritionist and I keep learning every day to provide the best treatment and service to each of my patients.”

Meet Dr. Maria Quiroz

Dr. Quiroz graduated with her Medical Doctorate at Dr. Manuel Gea Gonzalez Hospital in Mexico City. Through her research she has developed a passion for stem cells and regenerative medicine which has led to her opening Biostem Health, her own clinic in Sayulita. In her clinic Dr. Quiroz offers stem cell therapy, IV treatments, and hormone support to help people heal naturally and look and feel their best.

Dr. Maria Quiroz has already played an important role in the MM Amate project by helping to find financial donors and facilitating a discounted price for the women’s blood work. And now she will continue offering her support and expertise by reading and consulting with the MM women on the results of their blood tests.

Women of MM Art Exhibit
-Original & Digital Prints

On December 10, 2024, the "Portraits of Mujeres Movimiento" art exhibition and sale took place at Matiz Restaurant in Sayulita. The event celebrated the incredible women of Mujeres Movimiento, with portraits unveiling as a surprise to the women featured in the series.

The exhibition, which was free to attend, also offered the chance to purchase the artwork and a selection of related merchandise. The artist, Laura (lola) Lavigne, captured the essence of these women, honoring their contributions to both the organization and the community.

Artisan Animals

In Guadalajara, two indigenous single mothers, Mari and her sister Martha, have been rebuilding their lives since leaving Chiapas four years ago.

To support their families, they started a business making hand-stitched embroidered animals, initially crafted in Chiapas and finished in Guadalajara.

Mari, who speaks both Tsotsil and Spanish, sells their products on the streets, unlike other Chiapas women who lack Spanish and are often reduced to begging.

Mujeres Movimiento-Sayulita works with Keylena Falzone, owner of Secret Stash Pizza in Crested Butte, Colorado, to sell these wonderful animals. If you have a business or a group that would like to sell these handsewn, vibrant animals, please contact us.

Thank you Secret Stash Pizza!

Speed Spanish Class

Mujeres Movimiento-Sayulita hosts a unique initiative called "Speed Spanish." It is designed to help women practice and improve their Spanish in an interactive setting.

The event features ten-minute conversations with several local women, all conducted in Spanish. This format provides a dynamic practice experience and fosters cultural exchange through sharing life experiences.

The session lasts one hour, with participants rotating every ten minutes to engage with each new conversational partner.

This donation-only event is open to all women, making it an accessible and enriching experience for everyone involved.

English Classes

For Children

In 2021, Mujeres Movimiento-Sayulita and Escuela Cooperativa co-sponsored a five-week English language camp, Inglés Divertido, for local children from the public schools in Sayulita.

The camp continues today as an after-school program which serves about 40 children and is taught by bilingual Mexican women.

The curriculum was developed by an expert in the field of teaching English as an additional language and is based primarily on activities. The staff emphasizes positive reinforcement and models how collaboration and teamwork lead to successful learning.

For Women

In Spring 2023, Mujeres Movimiento-Sayulita debuted an English Language Program for women.

Weekly classes are currently being held to help local women progress in their speaking, reading and writing skills.

You can donate to either one of these programs specifically; be sure to comment that your donation is for the English Classes.

Mujeres in the Kitchen

Meet Irma, Claudia, and Maribel - local cooks who have begun cooking for renters here in Sayulita. Through sharing the gift of food, these women can supplement their income and introduce visitors to wonderful Mexican cuisine.

Mujeres Movimiento has been able to support Irma, Claudia and Maribel by advertising their services and coordinating all the logistics, so all they need to do is focus on their cooking!

If you are in Sayulita, email us to schedule a private dinner with these talented women. You can customize your own menu or they can create one for you.

Pickleball

Playing pickleball isn’t just fun - it supports our community!

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 5-7pm, we gather at the Sayulita primary school Damian Carmon, bringing together locals and visitors on the courts.

Thanks to player donations, we’ve purchased 500 books for the school’s English program! Join us, practice your Spanish, and build connections while you play. See you on the court!

Women’s Retreats

As part of our plan to provide wellness opportunities to local women, Mujeres, under the guidance of psychologist Sandra Avila, has sponsored 10 retreats.

Each retreat has explored a different emotional challenge women face as wives and mothers.

We have now begun to include physical wellness in our retreat model.
